Mary Ellen Brennan
I happened on yoga in 1979 during my first pregnancy. I found the practices I began to use empowered me physically, emotionally and mentally throughout the pregnancy, birth and afterwards. An important seed was sown.
In 1987 I re-discovered yoga. The seed planted in 1979 began to take root. Despite being a mother of two and working full time, I found time for regular home practice of yoga.
Yoga has been a very interesting personal journey for me. It has given me confidence to overcome many challenges and transitions in my life, including stress, illness, injury and bereavement.
My personal challenges have given me insight and the ability to understand the challenges of others.
In my classes and one to one sessions I aspire to enable each person to discover their unique potential through yoga practice.
Professional Development
I began to teach in 1994, having completed training with Charlie Stevens of Contemporary Yoga in Cork. In 1998 I qualified in teacher training with the British Wheel of Yoga (www.bwy.org.uk). At this time I met Hanne Gillespie, Director of Clonlea Yoga Studio, Dublin (www.clonlea-yoga-studio.com) and began one to one yoga tuition with her in the Viniyoga approach. From 1997 to 2007 I travelled regularly to Bristol in the U.K. to pursue studies Viniyoga with Paul Harvey, founder of Viniyoga Britain (www.yogastudies.org). I graduated n 2004 as a registered Viniyoga practitioner. This period of study culminated in a 2 week intensive post graduate study programme at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai, India, the home of Viniyoga.
In 2008 I began to study with Danish Teacher, Peter Hersnack (www.art-of-yoga.fr) and completed a 2 year post graduate course in France in 2011. To support my personal and professional yoga journey am part of a group of senior teachers who have met for regular seminars/workshops with Peter in France over nine years until Peter's untimely death from in April 2016. I continue to explore, create and develop my own personal practice of yoga inspired by the teachings that have been generously shared with me. I endeavour to pass on what I have learnt with students who are open and interested in engaging with this special way of supporting each of us to live life to the full.
I first encountered Reiki healing in 2004. I found it really helped me, complementing my practice of yoga, in dealing with health issues which I was experiencing at the time. I availed of opportunities to train as a practitioner and teacher of Reiki. I am a registered member of Reiki Federation Ireland (www.reikifederationireland.com)
My background is in working with children and young people with challenging behaviour. In 1977 I received an internationally recognised Diploma in Social Care. My studies and subsequent work experience and continuous professional development in this field are a wellspring of support for me in my current work.
